713 Media Group, Houston‚ a premier full-service studio with more platinum records than any other in the city, wanted to create an app called Flux TV‚ a hybrid platform that functioned as both a media viewer and a merch store. The content would come directly from Studio 713‚ production catalog. Initially designed for iPad and later adapted into a native iPhone experience, the app needed to feel unique in both look and navigation, with simplicity as the guiding principle.
We leaned into minimalism from the start. Since the app centered around video playback, the interface needed to stay out of the way‚ neutral and distraction-free. To achieve this, we used a pure black background paired with clean white text and call-to-actions, ensuring maximum contrast and a cinematic feel. Navigation was intentionally simple: inspired by the experience of flipping through old-school TV channels, users could easily move forward or backward through content. To support this, we introduced a brief startup gesture tutorial that taught users how to navigate the app effortlessly, keeping the experience intuitive and frictionless.
Airplay was a new feature, and we emphasised its streaming capability, allowing users to easily stream content to external devices.
Merchandise was integrated naturally into the UI, designed to feel like part of the app rather than a traditional ad.
The app successfully showcased Airplay functionality, with users easily streaming content to external devices, enhancing their viewing experience. The merch integration was seamless, designed to feel like a natural part of the app rather than an intrusive ad. The simple navigation proved intuitive: swiping left and right to browse videos, up and down for options and the store, and tapping to mark favourites made the app feel effortless to use. Overall the minimalistic approach helped keep the user experience clean and focused, while maintaining the app‚ identity and core functionality.
