Women In Tech: Meet Rupa
Rupa is one of many extremely talented women working at Ascendum and we are extremely grateful for all the work she does for the organization. She’s a hard worker and really motivated everyone on her team to strive for excellence. We snuck a few moments into her crazy schedule to ask her a few questions about how she got to where she is today.
Q: Who are you?
A: My name is Rupa and I’m a QA Lead at Ascendum Solutions. I started my career 3 years ago, as a QA Analyst, where I performed Test case creation and execution; providing end of the day progress updates; and assisted with E2E process verification on monthly releases.Then moved up to QA Team Lead, where I performed Software Development Life Cycle activities for Retail branch; drove planning and execution of team efforts; established regression plan coverage for defined projects and/or releases.
Now I am QA Lead, where I perform oversee all aspects of quality assurance including establishing metrics, applying industry best practices, and developing new tools and processes to ensure quality goals are met; improve test process based on the suggestions by others (team or client) and own judgment.
Q: How did you get into IT?
A: Well, I have a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering; and Master in Environmental, Safety and Health Management. Job opportunities seems to be only for experienced folks or if you are ready to do unpaid internships for 6 months to a year. When I was just entering the workforce, I don’t have the experience and the bills don’t wait for 6 months to a year either. So, looking for alternatives, I heard about Ascendum QA Bootcamp through a friend. I was super excited to hear that they train for free and give you a job (if you pass the final test of course). So, I applied and been through pre-screening involving – Excel Test, IQ Test, & Personality Test; & the bootcamp involving – 1 week long in class training and final test.
I attended the bootcamp in September, 2013. I hoped after the week long bootcamp, I will have job as an IT QA Analyst.I started working for Ascendum in November, 2013 as QA Analyst.
Till now I worked on 9 different projects with different platforms: Insurance, Book Publishing, Healthcare, Mortgage, and Enterprise Hardware industries and many others. I learned different tools and developed an understanding of leadership skills. It’s never ending learning exposure and I love it.
In 2015, I was promoted to be a QA Team Lead. In 2016, I was promoted to be a QA Lead. I would say Annual Performance Review performed at Ascendum have been my stepping stone for great success. I am extremely happy that Ascendum looks at the person’s ability to do the job, over experience.
Q: What is your favorite part about working in IT?
A: I have a real passion towards Technology. Technology is always developing or being used in new ways so, there’ll always be a need for technologists. There are constant challenges, which makes work week interesting with endless learning. The industry will bring the best out of you, because it asks for so much. I also love that there are a variety of platforms and tools you can learn and work on.
Most importantly, there is diversity in terms of race, gender, political beliefs, religion, geography that results in innovation.
Q: What is something you’re really proud of?
A: As QA Team Lead, I helped QA Director to update Ascendum Software Testing Bootcamp material. During which he understood my interest in teaching. So, he gave me an opportunity to teach a bootcamp. Now I’ve taught 8 bootcamps with a pass rate of 55 – 60%.
A major accomplishment I am most proud of was that I was able to reduce the time spent by our team on filling the excel status reports by enforcing 100% utilization of Test Management Tool provided by the client. This in turn resulted in transparency that clients really like. On an average 30 minutes of a QA Analyst’s day was saved to perform more testing activities.
Q: What is your advice to women in the IT industry or young professional women pursuing their career in the field?
A: I have a ton of advice!
- Set your goals and really go for it.
- Take opportunities when they come your way, even when it’s not part of your goal, because there are multiple ways to get to the top. It doesn’t have to be the same as everyone else’s.
- Not knowing something isn’t a weakness, take your time to ask questions and analyze the answers received.
- Don’t be intimidated, find your voice in the workplace and show willingness to learn.
- Step out of your comfort zone, and lead by example.
- Observe everyone in the organization, everyone you meet knows something you don’t.
